The Northport Historical Society is interested in our town’s colorful history, as well as preserving items related to this history. There is a small museum at 318 Columbia Street in what was once the town hall. We have also built a monument to commemorate the beginning of Northport. This monument is at the corner of Highway 25 and Waneta Road and overlooks the old smelter site. It includes a 16 foot replica smokestack, a wall that has 22 photo plates of the town’s early history and a bronze plaque attached to the smokestack. The historical society has acquired the old fire hose house that is at 411 Summit Avenue. We have completed the restoration and have the town’s 1935 fire truck in it.The organization continues to obtain oral histories from folks who have lived in this area for a number of years and have seen the many changes that have transpired. Hopefully we will see these histories transcribed and available in a printed form. Our interest in cemeteries has led us to discover old grave sites and begin their clean-up. The group now has federal tax exempt status. This will enable us to apply for federal grants so we can purchase and restore and maintain buildings in our town that are on the decline.

CD’s
Currently we have a two CD set of copies of the Northport News from July 11,1895 to June 30, 1905. These can be read on your computer. They are for sale for $15.00 for the set and are at the Mustang Grill and Kuk’s Tavern or you can call Jael Regis at 732-6675.

Calendars
Calendars from the 1998 town centennial are for sale for $5.00 each from society members. These have wonderful old photos of Northport’s early days.

Meetings
Meetings are on the 4th Monday of the month at the CE Building behind the Presbyterian Church at the corner of 4th and Center in Northport. Our meetings begin at 1:00 pm and last about an hour though some of us may stay longer to browse through items of interest.
If you or anyone that you know is interested in coming to visit our group, we would love to see you and welcome your input.
